Hello, my name is James Barry. I am working as an Applied Research Scientist at IBM Research Europe (Daresbury). Prior to that, I completed a PhD at the ADAPT Centre, Dublin City University supervised by Dr. Jennifer Foster and Dr. Joachim Wagner. My research was focused on neural dependency parsing, particularly in low-resource, multi-task and multilingual settings.

Other Activities
I, along with Joachim Wagner and Jennifer Foster submitted to the CoNLL 2018 Shared Task: Multilingual Parsing from Raw Text to Universal Dependencies as team “ADAPT-DCU”, where we placed 9th out of 27 systems in unofficial runs. We were unable to submit to the official competition due to an unfortunate power cut just before the deadline.
Teaching
I have been a Teaching Assistant for the following modules:
- Programming Fundamentals (2020)
- Introduction to Programming (2019, 2020)
- Computability and Complexity (2018, 2019)
Reviewing
I have been a reviewer for the following conferences and workshops:
- ACL (2020, 2022)
- EACL (2020)
- SyntaxFest (secondary reviewer) (2019)
- CoNLL UD Shared Task (2018)
